Become a Savvy Shopper: Tips and Tricks for Affordable Living
Even if you make a good income, saving money on everyday necessities provides you more opportunity to indulge in special treats. Whatever your motivation for saving a little extra dough might be, check out these affordable living tips. You might find yourself able to get that extra pair of shoes or even put a little money into savings.
Even if you are on a tight budget, you can indulge in trendy looks. Many times the place you shop makes more of a difference in your total fashion bill than the things you buy.
For eyewear, consider shopping online at Warby Parker. Here you can find designer styles at reasonable prices, and for each pair of eyeglasses Warby Parker sells, they donate a pair to someone less fortunate. This is a great way to give back while getting a great deal yourself.
Other accessories, such as jewelry, can cost a lot, but there are ways to limit your spending without limiting your style. I love to search for treasures among my grandma’s old costume jewelry. Other times, I simply go junking. You’ll be amazed at the beautiful vintage jewelry that can be found cheap at swap meets or garage sales.
Looking the best that you can is important, but many times the purchase of beauty products simply takes too big of a bite out of a household budget. Reduce waste and join savings programs to get the most out of every dollar you spend on beauty products.
Don’t use cotton balls as applicators. While these soft bits feel great against your skin, they absorb large quantities of product that then must be thrown away. Instead, use flat applicator pads or select product-specific applicators to reduce waste.
Many cosmetic companies have recycling programs. MAC Cosmetics encourages consumers to participate by giving a free lipstick with the return of empty product containers for recycling. Learn more about this program here.
There’s no limit to the number of places where you can save money. Frankly, if you spend money on a product, there is probably a way you can save a little on that product also.
Several online resources and mobile-phone apps supply coupon codes for consumers. One of my favorite sites for getting coupon codes is RetailMeNot.
Make sure you don’t overlook the things you already own. Shop your own closet before you go out to make more purchases. If you find this project overwhelming, get help from Stylebook, a mobile-phone app that will help you categorize and pair items you already own into great new outfits.
